At the Speed of Thought
Just as there is a causal speed limit known as the speed of light, there is  also a limit to consciousness in the human brain.  Thoughts produce, and are being produced by, chemical reactions in the brain.  The human ability to control, rather than be controlled by, the environment, is what seperates us from the other animals of this planet.  This is our level of consciousness.  The physical and chemical structure of the brain allows for a certain level of consciousness.  In order for this consciousness to grow, the physical and/or chemical structure must also change.

The limit of consciousness is not static like the light barrier (actually, that's not as static as we now think).  Some people have different chemical reaction ratios, causing some to be more conscious then others.  This manifests as a wide IQ range amoung humans.  Every so often any IQ gets "flashes" of higher consciousness.  These are manifested as insight, visions, nirvana, inspiration, intuition, "time standing still", "A-ha!", bliss, euphoria, rapture and revelation amoung others.  This holistic view of the environment usually does not last long.  When someone has such an experience, a certain chemical reaction, or series of reactions, has taken place.  Just as thought creates brain chemistry, brain chemistry creates thought.

It seems the human brain is only capable of sustaining such a chemical reaction for a short burst of time.  Is it because certain chemicals have been used up, and the metabolic wastes of such reactions build up and stops the process?  What if certain chemicals were present that could help sustain or even actually cause the experience?  Could the human brain withstand the work load?  Would it... fry?  Or would the presence of certain chemicals actually preserve the brain from oxidation and metabolic waste? The limit of consciousness in the human brain appears to be a matter of  a limited inate pharmacopoeic tendency.

Since thought can produce chemical reactions, certain thoughts can bring about higher states of consciousness.  Or the reverse... chemicals can induce higher states of consciousness.  Playing around with chemicals to find the right ones is not a good idea.  Even the most highly educated chemist does not know enough to insure absolute immunity to harmful side effects.  The brain already has a pharmacological program to make many different chemicals. One could at least consume the proper foods or dietary supplements to insure that the brain has all the materials it needs.  In conjunction with proper thoughts, higher consciousness and physical well-being are inevitable.  At the speed of thought, all things are possible, limited only by chemical, thus physical, processes.

Actually, the chemical and physical processes are the result of thought. :)
